Katharina Kiening is a writer and artist, primarily working at the intersection of literature and photography. Her artistic practice moves between analytical observation and surreal imagination, characterized by an atmospheric, often fragmentary approach.
Her work has appeared in numerous literary and art magazines, been exhibited in galleries, and received the Georg-Trakl-Förderungspreis für Lyrik, a literary award for poetry from the State of Salzburg. Her practice has also been supported by an EU travel grant and an artist-in-residence grant from the City of Salzburg.
Her writing explores memory, perception, and relational experience. Observations and fragments intertwine to create fluid textual landscapes in which time, space, and identity remain in constant flux. In her photographic work, fleeting moments are arranged in sequences and woven into open narrative structures.
With a background in Literature and Cultural Studies, she has worked in Salzburg's cultural sector since 2016. Since 2025, she has been a member of the Austrian Writers’ Association Podium and serves on the board of the literature and art association archipel – Verein für Kunst, Theorie und Literatur.
